Ancient Rome
According to legend the ancient city of Rome was founded by Romulus, one of two twin brothers who were raised by wolves.
The city began as a collection of mud huts on the Palatine Hill beside the River Tiber in 753 BC.
Villages on the other nearby hills eventually merged to create a single city..... Rome.
By the time of the reign of the Emperor Hadrian, Rome was a thriving and busy city with a population of more than a million people.
And, in 117 AD, when Hadrian became Emperor, the Roman Empire stretched from the shores of Britain and the Atlantic, to North Africa and from Spain to the Caspian Sea. Roman Soldiers were stationed in Gaul (Modern France), Spain, Thracia (Modern Greece), Egypt, Judea and Syria.
Rome had grown from a small sttlement on the banks of the River Tiber to a powerful empire dominating a huge area of the world and millions of people.
When Emperor Hadrian began his rule in 117 AD the Roman Empire had reached its greatest extent.
